Ventriloquism - Mastering the Illusion

Ventriloquism is nothing but an illusion to the ear. Making your audience believe that your ventriloquist dummy is speaking for itself is the whole point of this art. To do this, you must learn to “throw your voice,” or distort it so that it seems to be coming from another source other than you. It takes a considerable amount of practice in order to achieve this feat, but it can be done.
The hardest part of ventriloquism is learning how to speak without moving your mouth or lips. Not only must you be able to talk in this way, but your words must come out clearly. Your dummy will not be understood if all you can do is slur and garble your words. For this reason, it is important to focus on the act of voice manipulation before incorporating your ventriloquist puppy into your routine.
To satisfactorily master the voice illusion, you must be willing to practice often. It is recommended that you set up a schedule so that you can work on your hobby at least 4-5 times a week. If you do any less, you are likely to forget what you have learned and accomplished in between practices. Becoming a ventriloquist takes dedication and the willingness to keep at it until you have perfected it.
Once you have practiced your voice distortion have gotten it well under control, you can begin using a dummy during your practice. When just beginning, you can make your own ventriloquist dummy by using a paper bag, sock, or anything else that you can hold in your hand. You don’t need an expensive puppet until you begin doing shows outside of your practicing. At this point, you should also begin writing ventriloquist dialogues. This is the conversation that you and your dummy will have during the skit. These must be well rehearsed before you can put on a show for an audience, as they are difficult to ad-lib or improvise, especially in the begging.
Getting started in ventriloquism is a very enjoyable venture. Dedicate your time and effort to it, and you will be on stage in no time.
